Senior Engineer
SummaryReporting to the Director of Fermentation, the engineer will translate data into process designs by participation in R&D runs, pilot plant runs and demonstration operations. This engineer will participate in planning and data collection as well as in the hands-on operation of the scaled up processes and therefore requires significant travel (30%) to the pilot and demonstration sites. He/she will transfer technology from R&D into the pilot plant and direct technical implementation plans in pilot operations, as well as technology transfer and implementation from pilot to demonstration and commercial scale plants.
Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned.)
General lab maintenance, which includes the following:
- Technology translation of processes from bench to pilot to demonstration scale for specialty chemical production and biomass conversion and purification processes.
- Interact with design and engineering firm teams and EPC contractors to create and implement design packages
- Provide input to technology implementation plans and schedules for pilot and demonstration projects
- Work with operating plant staff in testing processes at pilot and demonstration scale
- Interact with pilot and demonstration plant teams including engineering, operations and maintenance in planning runs and collecting data
- Interface with vendors for equipment specifications and testing
- Help develop complete technology packages with PFDs, P&IDs, proformas, material and energy balances
- Manage technical aspects of some contracts
Skills & Qualifications
- PhD/MS in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering with biochemical or fermentation process unit operations experience required
- Requires 5-10 years experience in process design including material balance and cost estimation in fuels, chemicals or related field
- Hands on experience in operations start-up and troubleshooting required
- Experience in scaling up processes to pilot plant scale required, commercial scale preferred
- Expertise in Microsoft suite products including Excel, Project and Powerpoint required
- Knowledge of Aspen a plus
Physical Demands
- 40 % stationary computing/desk work
- 60 % lab or plant work - going up and down stairs and ladders, running equipment manually and from control systems.
